How TikTok engagement rate is calculated

There are two ways to do it and they answer different questions. By views — likes plus comments plus shares, divided by views — tells you whether the video worked with the people it reached. By followers, the same interactions divided by follower count, tells you how much of an audience an account can actually move. A brand negotiating a rate usually means the second; a creator asking why a video underperformed means the first.

TikTok's engagement rates run higher than Instagram's or YouTube's, because the For You page shows videos to people who do not follow the account. That is also why a single video going wide can drag the by-views rate down while the account itself is doing fine — a lot of views from people with no particular interest.

The bands here are for engagement by views. Under 2% is low, 2–4.5% is normal, above 4.5% is better than TikTok's own published benchmark, and above 8% is unusual outside small and highly engaged audiences.

Should I use views or followers as the denominator?
Use views to judge a video and followers to judge an account. If somebody has asked you for "the engagement rate" without saying which, they almost always mean by followers.
Do shares and saves count?
Shares do, and this calculator includes them. Saves are not exposed publicly on TikTok, so no calculator working from public data can include them — worth knowing if your figure disagrees with one from TikTok's own analytics.
Is a high engagement rate always good?
Not on its own. A very small account with a few hundred loyal viewers can post a rate a large account will never match, and it is not worth more to a brand. Read the rate next to the audience size, not instead of it.
